How to Listen

Cambridge University Radio is well worth listening to - we have a huge range of shows, covering all tastes. To listen you can either tune in on a radio set or stream our signal over the internet.

AM

CUR1350 is now broadcasting on AM (medium-wave) to the students of Cambridge at 1350kHz. To listen, all you need to do is tune in your radio.

To get the best reception for AM, the orientation of your aerial is important - try rotating it (or the whole set if it is a portable radio) until you get the strongest signal. You may also get better reception if you move the aerial around the room - placing the aerial next to a computer monitor is generally a bad idea. Steel and reinforced concrete tend to act as Faraday cages, so reception may be bad in newer buildings - if this is the case try placing the aerial near the window.

For hi-fi systems, your AM aerial will be a coil of wire on a plastic stand, whereas the FM aerial will probably be a single straight piece of wire. If the AM aerial is not present then there is no point in trying to tune the radio - you will not get anything. For portable radios the AM aerial will be built into the case - the extendible aerial on the top is only used for FM, so there is no need to use it for CUR1350.

Internet Streaming

Cambridge University Radio also broadcasts to the students of Cambridge over the internet. We now have two options available to you , Ogg Vorbis and RealAudio.

If your computer is connected to the university network, you can listen to us live, 24 hours a day.

For PC and Mac users, we recommend using our Ogg Vorbis Stream which offers a higher quality to RealAudio. In order to receive this, you need to have free player software installed on your computer. See below for details of players available. If you know you have the required software already, listen now.

Alternatively, you can use RealAudio if you already have RealPlayer 6 (G2) or above, then start listening now. Otherwise, see below for details of how to get the free RealPlayer.

If you have any questions about our Internet broadcasting, feel free to get in touch with us at committee@cur1350.co.uk. Engineering enquiries can be sent using an online form here.

Difficulties connecting in RealPlayer?

If clicking on our RealAudio link is not working and you have the latest version of RealPlayer installed on your computer, try one of these trouble-shooting tips to get it working:

1. You must be on the Cambridge University network (either directly or via magpie dialup) to be able to listen to CUR1350 - this is because of licencing arrangements, and due to the limited external connectivity the University has.

2. Load up the RealPlayer, click on the 'File' menu and choose 'Open Location'. In the box that appears, enter the following then click 'OK':
