About The Station
Cambridge University Radio is the University of Cambridge's very
own radio station, broadcasting 24 hours a day to students around
the University. CUR1350 also produces programmes which are broadcast nationwide
on the Student Broadcast Network.
CUR1350 was founded over 20 years ago by students for students,
and is still run the same way today. We broadcast from a studio
in Churchill College equipped with MiniDisc, CD, vinyl, tape and
computer playback facilities. We have professional interviewing and
editing equipment available for our members' use. There are currently
around 250 active members, with past alumni including Kevin Greening,
the former BBC Radio One presenter. All members are given full
training on the use of the studio equipment when they join and throughout
the duration of their membership - as well as training on how to make
and produce high quality radio programmes.
Music
Unlike almost every other radio station in the country, CUR1350 does
not have an enforced playlist. This means our presenters are free to play
a wide variety of music, so there's certainly something to suit
you. We also have a well-stocked and ever-expanding record library
in our studio building that all members can use during their
shows. We have reacently introduced an online database searching tool
making it easy for members to find what they want in the shortest time possible!
The music library contains many of the latest student releases
(see the new music page for more),
as well as older archived material. We operate a voluntary playlist
policy, where we suggest some tracks which people might like to
play during their shows, including both well-known and up-and-coming
bands.
Student Broadcast Network
We broadcast 24 hours a day, transmitting the Student
Broadcast Network (SBN) when none of our members on air. This
consists of the student radio programming from around
the country, including a CUR1350 show, as well as all the latest music.
SBN also provide our regular on-the-hour news - during the day
the news is produced by SBN, while Independent Radio News
(IRN) provides the service through the night.
Interviews
We regularly interview bands and celebrities - and not just
those who visit Cambridge. Recent interviewees include Kevin Greening,
Countdown host Richard Whiteley and Eddie Izzard, with
bands including Haven, Electric Soft Parade, Dreadzone, Super Furry Animals and Feeder.
